Volunteer Opportunity at World Relief Chicago

This volunteer opportunity was provided to us by Colleen Corliss (MAE), who is a volunteer with World Relief Chicago.

World Relief Chicago is a Christian non-for-profit social service agency that assists refugees through cultural adjustment and employment services, English classes for adults, children’s and family literacy programs, and immigrant legal services.

World Relief Chicago currently need volunteers for their English Tutoring Program

IN-HOME ENGLISH TUTORING PROGRAM – (Times are flexible, 2 hrs per week for 4 months)

This program connects volunteers to adult refugees. The volunteer goes to the same refugee home every week for English practice and friendship. This is a wonderful opportunity to help refugees adjust to their new lives in Chicago.

*This project was made possible by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a division of the Office of Secretary of State, using state funds designated for literacy.

Potential Volunteers Age 18 or Older:

The first step is to attend an orientation at our office. This session covers the refugee resettlement process, refugee issues abroad, adjustment factors for refugee families, and current volunteer opportunities at our office. In addition, we’ll talk about World Relief’s identity and mission as a Christian organization. World Relief does not expect all volunteers to self-identify as Christians. We do, however, expect volunteers to respect our mission and values as they carry out their work.

Secondly, if you know you are interested in doing ESL work, you’ll attend 12 hours of free training through Literacy Works. These trainings happen on two consecutive Saturdays every month.
