Upcoming Literary Events and Sister Helen Prejean at DePaul

This Thursday, May 10th at 6 p.m. in room 300 (The Rosati Room) of the John T. Richardson Library, all three Threshold Award judges will be giving a reading for students.

Please join Threshold in showing your appreciation for Kimberly Dixon, Victor Giron, and Eileen Favorite and listening to the poetry, fiction, and nonfiction of these three great writers.

As the academic year winds down, DePaul POETS will be hosting its annual “We Are POETS” event on Saturday May 12th from 7-10 p.m. in the DePaul Student Center 314AB. The event is free and open to the public, and all are more than welcome to attend. The evening will feature a short open mic, a showcase of poetry by POETS members, and featured poet Kelly Tsai. Doors open at 6:30 and the showcase will start promptly at 7PM.

Next week, May 14th through May 17th, Sister Helen Prejean, author of Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States will be visiting DePaul University. Sr. Prejean will be featured at a number of public events, all detailed on the flyer posted above.

Of special interest to English students is the week’s final event. On Thursday, May 17th from 12:00-1:30pm in the Lincoln Park Student Center Room 220, Prof. Michele Morano and Ann Stafford will be asking Sr. Prejean questions about the process and ethics of memoir writing and how writing can lead to social transformation in a panel entitled, “Thinking Back/Writing Forward:  A Dialogue on Memoir Writing with Sr. Helen Prejean.”

MAWP students should look forward to an email from Prof. Morano with more details about the event, although all are welcome to attend.

For more information about Sr. Prejean’s public lecture, the collection of notes she has donated to DePaul, and how to get involved in a staged reading of some of her work, please refer to the DePaul Newsline’s article Sister Helen Prejean Returns to DePaul.
