David MathewsProgram: M. A. in Writing and Publishing

Accomplishments, Awards, Publications, and Scholarships: David Mathews is a life-long Chicagoan who is a Graduate student at DePaul University, where he is a part of their Writing & Publishing program (MAWP). He graduates this June. He is a member of DePaul’s Writers Guild, and the secretary of DePaul’s chapter of the English Honors Society, Sigma Tau Delta. He is also coined the “DePaul Cabal,” a group of undergraduate and graduate poets and writers who support and encourage each other’s work. They offer a “sacrifice,” a piece of work that literally or figuratively kills an animal.

His first published poem “Urban Archer,” which he worked on in Writers Guild, will be published in the next issue of After Hours, coming out this June. It, interestedly enough, was his “sacrifice” poem for the group.

Favorite Courses at DePaul: Richard Jones’s Writing Poetry class was my favorite–he is a big reason why I came to MAWP, but I really do not want to pick a favorite class of professor- everyone in the MAWP program made me a better writer and person–even professors I never had in class but supported my work nonetheless.

Post-graduation Plans: I am currently working on my first collection of poetry, View From The Cheap Seats, which deals with class, race, and the gentrification of Chicago.
