The Union League Civic & Arts Foundation’s (CAF) 2013 Creative Writing Competition is now accepting submissions.

The competition is open to high school students (division 1), college students (division 2), graduate/postgraduate or young adults under the age of 30 (division 3).

This year CAF will award up to $13,000 in awards for excellence.  In addition to the substantial monetary prizes, this competition is a great opportunity for young writers to get their work noticed.  Past judges have included Golden Apple Recipients and published authors.  There is no application fee for participants.

DePaul’s Office of Teaching, Learning, and Assessment is looking for a new Assistant Director for Teaching Support. This position will create and sustain programs and services that will improve the teaching quality of all faculty, especially new and part-time faculty, within departments and colleges as well as across the University.  This position will work with Deans, Associate Deans, department chairs and program directors, University/College/School Committees and individual faculty to promote and support innovative and effective teaching practices. One of the main responsibilities of the position is to oversee the Teaching Commons Teaching and Learning Certificate Program, which is a workshop series that incorporates building portfolios in Digication.

It has just been announced that the 2013 Chicago Writers Conference will take place on September 27-29th, 2013. The conference will start out with a kick-off party on the evening of Friday, September 27th. Events on Saturday and Sunday will be held at Harold Washington Library, just a block away from DePaul’s Loop campus.

In Student News: Congratulations to MAWP student Lisa Applegate, whose piece, “Heartland Love Story: This Is What Your Government Would Tear Asunder,” was published as the cover story of this week’s Newcity magazine. Lisa originally wrote “Heartland Love Story” for Prof. Ted Anton’s Literature of Fact class in Winter 2013. In addition to reading Lisa’s work in Newcity online, you can also pick up physical copies of the magazine for free around the city, including at DePaul’s Richardson Library.

Fish 05-08-13The DePaul Humanities Center would like to invite the DePaul community to attend the next event in their Nostalgia and The Age of Enlightenment Series. On Wednesday, May 8th, 2013  at 6:00 p.m. in room 314 of the DePaul Student Center, (2250 N. Sheffield Avenue), prominent literary theorist and New York Times columnist Stanley Fish will present: What are the Humanities Worth?”

This talk considers two recent books in the ‘crisis of the humanities’ genre, and finds in them opposing attitudes toward what both authors see as the accelerating decline of the humanities. One author is trying to think up strategies for slowing down the decline; the other believes that the decline and eventual demise can’t happen fast enough. After drawing out these positions, Fish makes a distinction between the humanities in general and the academic study of the humanities, and then asks what would be lost if the latter were allowed to wither. In order to have an object before us as we think about the question, he will analyze two poems by George Herbert , “The Holdfast” and “The Forerunners.”

Stanley Fish is the Davidson-Kahn Distinguished University Professor and a professor of law at Florida International University, in Miami, and dean emeritus of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has also taught at the University of California at Berkeley, Johns Hopkins and Duke University, in Durham, N.C. Fish is the author of 10 books, including “How Milton Works,” “The Trouble With Principle”, “Professional Correctness: Literary Studies and Political Change” and “There’s No Such Thing as Free Speech, and It’s a Good Thing, Too.” His essays and articles have appeared in The Chronicle of Higher Education, Harper’s Magazine, Esquire, The Atlantic and The New York Times.

Notting Hill Editions is delighted to announce The William Hazlitt Essay Prize, a new annual literary prize for the best essay in the English language, published or unpublished, on any subject. The award is named in honour of William Hazlitt (1778-1830), great master of the miscellaneous essay.

The prize will be judged on the originality of the ideas, the quality of the prose and the ability to communicate to a wide audience. All entries for the competition must be between 2,000 and 8,000 words.

Award value: £15,000. Five runners-up will each receive £1000.
Judges: Harry Mount (chair), Gaby Wood, Adam Mars-Jones, Lady Antonia Fraser, David Shields.

Eligibility / Submissions:

  • Authors of any nationality are eligible, but submissions must have been written originally in English.
  • If already published, the essay must have appeared for the first time in periodical (print or online) rather than book form, between January 1st, 2012 and July 31st, 2013.
  • Submissions (one entry per author) may be made by author, publication or agent. Submission of an essay by a publisher or other third party will be taken as agreement by the author that he/she is willing for the submitted work to be considered. The judges reserve the right to call in any unsubmitted eligible essay.

Submissions deadline: August 1st, 2013.

Today in Student News: Congratulations to MAWP student Bethanie Hestermann, who just signed her first book contract with Chicago Review Press! Bethanie will be co-authoring a children’s book (ages 9+) tentatively called Zoology for Kids, along with her husband, Josh Hestermann.  Their book will be part of Chicago Review Press’ fall 2014 list. As Bethanie describes it, “The book will introduce young minds to the basic principles of animal life through hands-on activities, while providing a behind-the-scenes look at zookeeping, veterinary medicine, wildlife research, and conservation efforts.”

In Faculty News: Make sure to check out Prof. Kathleen Rooney‘s piece in the New York Times magazine about teaching contemporary poetry and comedian Jack Handley, titled, “And Now, Deep Thoughts about ‘Deep Thoughts.'”

Prof. Rooney will also be reading her poetry at Curbside Splendor Publishing’s “Salon Splendor” event, a night of intimate readings, literary SalonSplendordiscussion, warm music, and world-class tea at Madame ZuZu’s Tea House. The topic of the night is “origins,” and reading along with Rooney will be Okla Elliot and James Tadd Adcox. There will be live music by Good Evening and the event will be hosted by Curbside Splendor’s Senior Editor, Jacob S. Knabb.

In “Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break the Silence” (1967), Martin Luther King calls for an anti-racist and internationalist response to oppression in its various guises. Taking King’s Vietnam speech as a starting point, this essay contest asks students to consider what such a speech might look like today.

The contest is open to all undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at DePaul University during the 2012-2013 academic year. Graduate students should submit an essay of 3000-3500 words, and there will be a $500 prize for the best graduate student essay.

DePaul University’s Master of Arts in Liberal Studies & Master of Arts and Science in Interdisciplinary Studies programs would like to announce a call for papers and presentations for their 2013 AGLSP Conference in Chicago, Urban Gateways: Immigration and the Global City. The conference will take place from October 10-12th, 2012, in Chicago, and proposals are due on June 1st, 2013.

Cities have always been gateways to new dreams. For past and present global migrants, ethnic enclaves beckon with foods, houses of worship, and shops that provide the atmosphere of home, and buffer the transition to hybrid identity. But how does the immigration experience differ today from that of the past? What factors drive immigration today, and what new forms of urban culture do they create? How do economic, political and social issues impact the urban immigrant experience?

The 2013 AGLSP Conference in Chicago invites papers that explore immigrant life in cities large and small through history, the social sciences, literature and the arts. Papers may be based in particular disciplines, but special consideration will be given to papers which combine the perspectives of various disciplines, and which engage academic but non-specialist audiences. Proposals that address the integration of this theme into Liberal Studies curricula and classes are
welcome.

Presentations should be 20 minutes long with an additional 5 to 10 minutes for questions. Visual and other media are welcome where appropriate, but prospective presenters are reminded to rely on PowerPoint only when it offers an appropriate enhancement to the material.

The DePaul Humanities Center extends its invitation to a reading with author and DePaul faculty member Christine Sneed on Wednesday, March ChristineSneed 03-13-13 finvers feb27fin13th, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. in room 314 of the DePaul Student Center. Prof. Sneed will be reading from her new novel, Little Known Facts, recently featured on the cover of the New York Times Book Review. (You can read Ex Libris’s recent writeup of Sneed’s new book here.)

Christine Sneed teaches creative writing at DePaul University. Her first book, Portraits of a Few of the People I’ve Made Cry, was a 2009 AWP Grace Paley Prize winner, a finalist for the 2010 Los Angeles Times Book Award, winner of the 2011 John C. Zacharis First Book Award from Ploughshares, and winner of the Chicago Writers Association 2011 Book of the Year. The San Francisco Chronicle also chose Portraits as one of the fifty best fiction books of 2011.  Her short fiction has appeared in a number of literary journals, including PEN/O. Henry Prize Stories, Best American Short Stories, Ploughshares, The Southern Review, Meridian, and Pleiades.

All are invited to attend this unique opportunity to hear from a gifted writer, one of DePaul’s own, reading from just-published work for free.

And finally: There’s only one week left to submit to the annual Gulf Coast Prizes–the Gulf Coast Prize Contest closes March 15th. The contest awards a total of $6,000 to poets, essayists, and fiction writers. This year’s judges are Stanley Plumly (Poetry), Maggie Shipstead (Fiction), and Darin Strauss (Nonfiction/Lyric Essay).

The winner in each genre receives $1,500, and there are two $250 honorable mentions in each genre. The winners will appear in Gulf Coast 26.1, due out in Fall 2013, and all entries will be considered for paid publication on the Gulf Coast website as Online Exclusives.

Gulf Coast is accepting submissions both via the online submissions manager and via postal mail. The $23 reading fee includes a year-long subscription to Gulf Coast. The deadline for submissions is March 15, 2013. Only previously unpublished work will be considered. Fiction and nonfiction entrants may submit one piece, up to 7,000 words; poetry entrants may submit as many as five poems, up to ten pages. How Long Will I Cry March 18 Invitation

For the past two years, creative writing students from DePaul have been traveling all over the city to interview Chicagoans about youth violence. This undertaking—part of a unique partnership between DePaul and Steppenwolf Theatre—is finally coming to fruition.

How Long Will I Cry?: Voices of Youth Violence premieres at Steppenwolf Theatre this week. The play was recently written up in Time Out Chicago magazine, and you can read the article at timeoutchicago.com/arts-culture/16052251/how-long-will-i-cry-at-steppenwolf.

The English Department would like to invite you and a guest to a special performance of the play at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, March 18th at Steppenwolf Theatre, 1650 N. Halsted. This event—sponsored by DePaul’s Office of Institutional Diversity and Equity—will honor those who made the oral-history project happen: our own creative-writing students, as well as the people from all over Chicago who welcomed them into their lives and their hearts.

Admission is free for DePaul guests—but seating is extremely limited. Reservations must be made no later than noon on Friday, March 8th. If you are certain that you will attend, follow the attached instructions and reserve your seats right away. Tickets will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis. Because supply is so limited, out of respect for other guests, please refrain from reserving seats unless you’re absolutely certain you’ll be able to attend.

Award-winning poet Debra Bruce will be reading from her latest collection, Survivor’s Picnic, at Northeastern Illinois University on Monday, March 4th, along with several NEIU alumni poets–including current MAWP student David Mathews.

Crab Orchard Review is now accepting entries to its 2013 Student Writing Awards in Fiction, Nonfiction, and Poetry. One winner will be chosen in each category (fiction, literary nonfiction, and poetry). The three category winners will each receive an award payment of $500 and be published in the 2014 Winter/Spring issue of Crab Orchard Review.

Guidelines: The award competition is open to all undergraduate and graduate students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents currently enrolled (at the time of the submission period) full- or part-time in a U.S. college or university. All entries will be screened by published and accomplished writers and editors. Entries must be previously unpublished, original work written in English. Simultaneous submissions are considered, but an entry is ineligible to win if accepted for publication elsewhere.

All entries must be submitted online by March 18th, 2013 (entries will be accepted until 11:59:59 PM (Central Time)). All entrants will be notified of results by email.

Page Restrictions: Prose entry length: up to 4000 words for fiction or for literary nonfiction. Poetry entry length: one poem only, up to 3 pages in length. Entrants may only submit one story, one nonfiction piece, or one poem. Do not submit work in more than one genre.

Summer Literary Seminars is very excited to announce their 2013 unified (Lithuania and Kenya) literary contest for fiction, poetry, and nonfiction. It will be held this year in affiliation with Fence Magazine and The Walrus, as well as online magazines Joyland, Branch, and DIAGRAM. This year’s contest will also feature new prizes sponsored by the Center for Fiction, St. Petersburg Review, and the esteemed Graywolf Press. Judging the contest are award-winning writers Mary Gaitskill (fiction), Eileen Myles (poetry), and Ander Monson (non fiction).

This year the contest entry will include a one-year subscription to Fence Magazine.

By popular demand and due to multiple requests from those attending the AWP Conference in Boston (look for SLS there with their contest partners), SLS has decided to extend the contest deadline to March 9th, 2013.

Contest winners in the categories of fiction and poetry will have their work published in print in Fence, and online in The Walrus. Additionally, they will have the choice of attending (airfare, tuition, and housing included) any one of the SLS-2013 programs – in Vilnius, Lithuania (summer 2013); or Nairobi-Lamu, Kenya (December).

Second-place winners will receive a full tuition waiver for the program of their choice, and publication in online magazine Joyland (fiction) or Branch (poetry). Third-place winners will receive a 50% tuition discount and publication in Joyland (fiction) or Branch (poetry).

The contest winner in the category of non fiction will be published in DIAGRAM, and will have the choice of attending (airfare, tuition, and housing included) any one of the SLS-2013 programs.

The College of DuPage is seeking a full-time, tenure track faculty member to teach English Composition courses. Opportunities to teach other English courses, such as Technical and Creative Writing, based on credentials and availability.  Additional duties include advising students, curriculum development and committee work.  Opportunities may exist to teach a flexible schedule that may include teaching assignments days, evenings and weekends. Applicants must have a Master’s Degree in English and experience teaching at the college level.

The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Office of International Education has announced an open position for an English Language Support Coordinator. The starting date is March 18th, and they will review applications as they arrive and continue to do so until the position is filled. Download or view the position description [PDF].

Responsibilities

This position develops and coordinates all aspects of programming and curriculum for two semester-long and one summer full-time Intensive English Program (IEP) per year, involves overall responsibility for the academic and financial success of the IEP, provides direct academic assistance to and support for self-selected international and domestic students in need of English Language (EL) assistance, and develops and implements Short-term Visitors Programs (fee-for-service programs offered to assist units on campus in hosting student, faculty and other groups from abroad).

This position reports to the OIE Director; prior to each formal evaluation, the Center for Academic Resources (CAR) Director may also provide input.  This position requires evening and weekend responsibilities, especially while guests are on campus.  Travel is a possibility but is not guaranteed.  There are no secretarial or support staff associated with this position; student support is a possibility contingent on budget.

Requirements

  • M.A. in applied linguistics, ESL, TESOL or related area with formal preparation in models, methods, and major interventions developed for EFL/ESOL students
  • Ability to serve as Designated School Official (DSO) and Assistant Responsible Officer (ARO) for F & J student programs (U.S. citizen or permanent resident, per federal regulations)
  • Demonstrated experience in intensive English program development, management and supervision; methods of assessing English proficiency; curriculum development; and implementation of learning experiences that enhance critical thinking and metacognition
  • Significant EFL/ESOL-related teaching experience and demonstrated ability to guide reading, writing, grammar and discussion and to utilize techniques that can assist in providing successful learning experiences for EFL/ESOL students
  • Ability to fluently read, write, and speak in English; excellent verbal and written skills
  • Excellent listening and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact diplomatically with a diverse group of individuals, to develop rapport quickly and to communicate clearly and effectively with non-native speakers of English, all in a service-oriented environment
  • Initiative and ability to work independently without close supervision
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks, performing successfully and with composure
  • Ability to independently address & solve complex issues through teamwork and consultation

  • Intermediate or Advanced proficiency in MS Office 2000 (Word, Excel, Access); ability to learn additional software packages as required

Preferences

  • Significant experience teaching, living or studying abroad
  • Proficiency in at least one second language which is not a native language (this may be English)
  • Demonstrated ability to assess instructional staff performance
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a given budget
  • Experience serving culturally and linguistically diverse students
  • Familiarity with historical, deep level cultural and educational issues relevant to at least one recent immigrant group in the United State
